I'd stand up here and scream sexism and agism, except it usually is older women who need a map and a flashlight to finish their projects---and yes, we must have a finished piece at the end of the class that looks identical to the teacher's.
I think these are the same people who think of art as competitive, and that there's some sort of definite finishing line that must be crossed. They don't get process, they don't get exploring their own creativity within some loose boundaries provided by today's project---they just get I finished first and mine looks just like yours.
