For my birthday she gave me a gift that couldn't be wraped, unable to break, and free-the gift of time.
Sunday was the first of adventures chosen each month to fullfill the gift of time-A trip to the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis.
To say that I enjoyed it, would be an understatement. Not only was I impressed by the amount of art, and some of the permenant collection, the Andy Warhol exhibit alone was worth the price of admission.
Having dabled in making art in the last year, with being in a few art history classes in college, and visited some of the big name museums around the world, I have somewhat of a background to understand some of the artwork and an eye to distinquish the styles of the big name (well known artists).
Sometimes-especialy with abstract art, one has to look beyond the paint to find the theory, the purpose, the artists meaning behind it. Exactly what is he or she conveying about society, about themselves through the medium of art.
Case in point: the gold urinal. A reproduction (Possibly) of a urinal found in most mens loo's around the country, done in a gold shinny overtone. She said she "didn't get it", and yet it was one of my favorite pieces in the gallery. Taken from the "dada" period where artists found art in every day objects, it spoke volumes: Why would you choose to use a urinal, paint it shinny gold, and call it art? Immediately my mind started to think: Urinal: male, dirty, releasing. Gold: golden showers, something value, lasts forever, priceless, pure....
Same way with the huge mural project of images of Hitler with Disney world, and pornogary, mixed with children. Brilliant!
For minneapolis to have artwork by Jasper Johns, a Giacometti, Rothko, and a kooning was impressive... it was a most excellent day.
