Memorial Day
I took Friday off, with the idea of hiking on the superior hiking trail for the weekend. Fun.
Friday morning, came and went. It was after 12:30p.m. before I left. Didn't feel well in the morning. Go Figure. I packed camping gear, between nausea spells. Was concerned about playing in holiday traffic up to the north shore. Been stuck in traffic for hours, due to bottle necks on the route.
Mitigated the situation and booked at Hotel in Bimiji. Half way through the six hour drive, I still wasn't sure the roads side attraction I was looking for, was at my destination. Paul Bunyan and Babe the Blue Ox, statues from 1937, were there to welcome me. It's a known Minnesota Landmark, and I have been there. Got a cheep hotel room, which allowed me to finalize gear and get a decent nights sleep.
Saturday Morning I drove to Grand Rapids, MN, the birthplace of Judy Garland. There is museum and the birthplace house located across from the Home Depot. Its 100% Cheese fest, and the lady working the desk was in high school. A total hoot. She helped me take some selfies. They have three items from the movie of the wizard of Oz: A wiki Spear, a test dress, and the carriage Judy rode on in the Emerald City. 9:00 a.m. in the morning, and its filed with 4 men, all with camera's. Go figure. There was a nice section about Judy being "gay" Icon, other memorabilia, and a tv playing her concert series. But the real reason, the museum is known, is for the shoes.
Ken Shaw, donated the ruby slippers, one of the four known pairs, to the museum, for a limited time. That limited time, was interrupted when they were stolen, in 2005(?). They recently were recovered and the museum was back in the news.
They had a display with paper clippings about the event, and the displace case was still where it always has been. This time the plexiglass was missing and the shoes were placed with plastic repo's. When I asked if they were getting the back, the high school girl, said no.
I left Grand Rapids, and headed East, hoping to hit the hiking trail by early afternoon. That didn't happen, and a miss turn lead to a lengthier drive, that at the end of the day, staying at the Fairy Space up in the woods, seemed like the best decision. I hit that by mid afternoon.
There were several trees down, one across the main drag, which prevented me from going any further down the road, with the car. I parked off the "entrance" road, with a note to Oni, in case someone questioned the car. I hiked the rest of the way in. I was the first inhabitant since winter.
The land provided me with instant shelter, in the small sleeping cabin, and the isolation/nature/experience I wanted. I read most of my book ("I was better last night, by Harvey Firestien), I didn't see a soul in 24 hours. There was a nice friendly Blue Jay that visted a few times. It was quite lovely.
I was on the road by 6;30 in the morning, and through the trouble traffic spots before 9 a.m., sailing home. It was a great little git away and road trip.
